SA’s World Cup dream still on track
15 May 2008 - It was to a thunderous applause and tears of jubilation that Fifa President Sepp Blatter announced four years ago that South Africa’s bid to host the World Cup was successful.
When Mr Blatter opened the envelope with South Africa’s name on it, many believed it signified an end to pessimism surrounding Africa and the beginning of new things to come - not just for South Africa, but for the continent.

2010 Highlights
- 10 April 2008 - Transport Minister Jeff Radebe vows that the first phase of Gautrain rapid rail transport will be completed prior the 2010 Fifa World Cup and within budget.
- 10 April 2008 - The Department of Transport announces that it will submit its 2010 World Cup plan to Fifa for approval by June. The department says its plans for the tournament are well on track.
- 09 April 2008 - Johannesburg residents form "Joburg United" to bolster the city’s support of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
