Before FIFA was able to award South Africa the right to stage the 2010 FIFA World CupTM in 2010, the Government had to provide a number of guarantees – assurances required of any country that wants to put in a bid to host the event.

In some cases, South Africa needed no extra legislation to give effect to these guarantees. However, a few of the guarantees did require that Parliament pass new laws.

	2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Special Measures Acts Special Measures These two acts are the primary pieces of legislation and govern issues such as national anthems and flags, access to South Africa, safety, exclusion zones, alcohol, and health and medicines.
	Merchandise Marks Act Merchandise Marks This Act gives the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ protected event status, a guarantee to protect FIFA’s intellectual property rights and to prevent “ambush” marketing
	Revenue Laws Amendment Act This Act gives effect to the guarantee that FIFA would be assured of a supportive financial environment for the 2010 World Cup.
