Pretoria - The City of Tshwane's Community Safety department is ready to host the Confederations Cup. The last dry-run for stadium precinct traffic control will be held on 23 May 2009 during the Super 14 rugby match between the Blue Bulls and the Crusaders. The match will be held at the Loftus Versfeld stadium.

A number of streets will be closed for the match. The road closures will commence from 08h00 on Saturday and will only be reopened after the match, which is estimated to end at 17h00.

There will be a park-and-ride operation. This means that all match goers will have to leave their vehicles at a designated parking facility. They will then be transported to the stadium by busses organised by the city. The designated area is the Rugby Union grounds located at the corner of Queen Wilhelmina Road and Totius Street.

Members of the Peace Development Programme (PDP) will patrol the inside of the park-and-ride. PDPs are young people who have basic training in road traffic control and crime prevention by way of identifying possible threats and alerting the Metro Police.

Because of the park-and-ride arrangements fans are advised to arrive on time so that they are able to enter the stadium before the match commences.

The only vehicles which will be allowed to enter the restricted area are the busses ferrying the players, accredited vehicles ferrying some of the top officials, then police and other emergency vehicles. Players' busses will be escorted to and from the stadium.

In addition, only residents of the Loftus Versfeld precinct will be allowed in and out of the precinct. Residents are encouraged to carry their accreditation tags that have been issued by the Metro Police. Alternatively, they should also have with them their municipal services statements as a form of identification.

A total of hundred and forty (140) Metro Police officers will be on duty for the operation. They will be complemented by the Fire Brigade and Ambulance Services personnel.

In addition to executing traffic control duties the Metro Police will also undertake crime prevention activities. This may include but will not be limited to vehicle searches. Individuals may also be subjected to searches should the Metro Police deem it fit for crime prevention purposes.

From the experiences gained over the number of games that have been managed in the manner outlined here, and during major events such as the presidential inauguration, the department is quite confident that the Confederations Cup will be executed in a safe and secure environment. We are ready!
