A vastly improved public transport system is one of the legacies South Africa will secure from the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World CupTM.

Many other countries and cities have used major events to help fast-track transport system improvements; so too will South Africa use this opportunity to speed up its plans to develop public transport.

The Government has allocated more than R9 billion for municipal transport, precinct upgrading, roads and rail services to directly support 2010.

The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state-of-the-art rapid rail network being built in Gauteng. The rail connection comprises of two links, namely a link between Tshwane (Pretoria) and Johannesburg and a link between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton. Apart from the three anchor stations on these two links, seven other stations will be linked by approximately 80 kilometres of rail along the proposed route.
