2010 economic spin-offs for freight industry
SA2010 reporter
Johannesburg - The Director General of the Department of Transport Mpumi Mpofu says the South African freight industry needs to take advantage of business opportunities that will come with the country’s hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup™.
Mpofu was addressing delegates attending the South African Association of Freight Forwarders Congress at Emperors Palace east of Johannesburg. The Congress firmly puts the spotlight on freight forwarders and the critical role the industry plays in the supply chain and the economy.
“For those who are aiming to utilise available economic opportunities, our environment is conducive for that growth, and we must all take full advantage of the various opportunities in the pipeline.
“Another important opportunity lies ahead of us from the 2010 Fifa World Cup which we must all take advantage of because it presents clear business opportunities with strong economic spin-offs within the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region,” said Mpofu.
The South African freight industry will play an essential role during the staging of the World Cup in 2010 as visitors and participating countries will be moving goods like playing and other training materials from one Host City to another.
Mpofu also highlighted some of the challenges facing the freighting industry such as aging infrastructure, and to a certain extent incapacitated road networks saying the government will be working on addressing these challenges for next three years.
“We remain committed to maintaining infrastructure at the level that is required, we think to some extent we may have to take critical decisions about the need to expand the infrastructure at the cost of maintaining it.
“I think you will see over the next three years a shifted focus to maintenance of infrastructure and limited new development of infrastructure in particular areas. Importantly for that we’ve received a fiscal injection from government to the tune of R17-billion for the road infrastructure network and we hope that over the next three years is going to assist us to alleviate some of the problems. In the various other areas of our operations such as public transport we have received very important allocations for 2010 (World Cup),” she said.
The congress ends on Thursday.
