'2010 must leave behind a legacy'

Michael Appel

Johannesburg – The residents of Johannesburg said they would like the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ to leave a lasting impression on the city, during the community stakeholder meetings with the city’s municipality.

The City of Joburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, Councilor Nandi Mayathula-Khoza said the city had acknowledged the call from residents that legacy planning should benefit all.

A total of 11 community workshops have been held since February and the key issues raised by the residents focused on information distribution, fan experience, business opportunities, and skills development.

Speaking at the launch of the city’s 2010 Summit held at Nasrec on Saturday, Ms Mayathula-Khoza said indeed, the city had already set in motion various projects which will benefit the city long after 2010.

The MMC highlighted a number of projects underway throughout the city which include the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system, a new water and electrification programme as well as a city greening project.

Phase 1 of the BRT is set to be completed and ready ahead of the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup, widely believed to be a test of infrastructure before the World Cup in 2010.

Also, the City has embarked on anti-crime initiatives, “to ensure that people enjoy a free and safe 2010 World Cup that will remain for our benefit long after the World Cup is over”.

In terms of upgrading stadiums, construction of the R2.1-billion Soccer City is 40 percent complete and on schedule. It should be complete by 2009.

Ellis Park, with an upgrade budget of R221-billion, is 50 percent complete and on schedule for completion in 2008.

Other venues which soccer teams will use for training include the Rand Stadium due for completion next month; Dobsonville Stadium is ahead of schedule and also due for completion in May 2008; Orland Stadium will be ready by June 2008 and Ruimsig or Cecil Payne Stadia will be upgraded as the fourth training venue.

“Based on the ideas and concerns raided by residents, we invited them to the 2010 Summit to reaffirm our commitment to residents regarding the city’s 2010 programme,” said the MMC.

Included in the city’s response to the residents concerns is the establishment of local 2010 forums in each region of the city.

In terms of information dissemination, “[The] aim is to ensure that all information in the planning, projects and opportunities reach all residents by all available mediums; and to regularly update residents on progress.

“[The City’s very own] 2010 website will be going live within the next two months,” said Ms Mayathula-Khoza.

For those wishing to find out what business opportunities exist surrounding the word cup, the city will assist various businesses to find those opportunities.

Advice will also be on hand for Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) through local structures and workshops.

Skills development in the run-up to the world cup will focus on tourism, translation, handcrafting, operating Bed and Breakfasts, and Information Technology.

The city has also committed itself to adopting a tourism marketing strategy which will ensure that as many people as possible benefit from tourism activities, involving volunteers to enroll for training and development.

“The city’s theme for the world cup is ‘Joburg United’, and it calls on all of us to unite and focus our energy on making sure it is the best world cup ever,” concluded the MMC.
