Angola to have 40 new hotels by 2010
Huambo - Forty new hotels with modern equipments and of four or five star standards will be built in various provinces of Angola by 2010, says Hotel and Tourism Minister Eduardo Jonatao Tchingunji.
The minister, who was speaking at the re-inauguration ceremony of the Roma Hotel, said the initiative was part of efforts of his ministry to collaborate in the solving of the nation’s poverty and unemployment problem.
Minister Tchingunji, however, did not reveal the provinces benefiting from the hotel building programme nor the amount to be spent on the construction.
"With upcoming sporting events in the country, it is important to create conditions for adequate accommodation, showing our competence in this sector, and responding to the speed of the country’s economic development," said the minister.
He added that the necessary support would be extended to reviving hotel staff training schools so that the hotels would be able to provide the expected services.
The Huambo province has three operating hotels, one residential centre and several guest houses.
Hotel Roma has the capacity to accommodate an average of 122 people, distributed into 60 rooms and also employs 82 people.
According to a report issued in June from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa on regional economic developments in 2006, the Angolan economy is among the top 10 best performers in Africa.
In Southern Africa, Angola is at the top, followed by Mozambique, (7.0.9 percent), Malawi (6.9 percent) and Zambia (6 percent).
With regard to financial management, Angola is among the three best African countries. The national currency (Kwanza) had an appreciation of 8.5 per cent relative to the United States dollar in 2006.
Angola's economic stability is not only the result of the increase of oil revenues, but also because of inflows of foreign direct investment, a sustainable monetary policy and a macro-economic management adjusted to the current moment, the report said.
