CAF honours President Mbeki

Cape Town - Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Issa Hayatou on Sunday honoured State President Thabo Mbeki with the Order of Merit Award in Cape Town.

According to a statement released by the Presidency, this gesture symbolises the role played by South Africa in unifying football.

As CAF is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, a host of activities to pay tribute to those who played various roles since the creation of the organization on February 8, 1957 in Khartoum, Sudan are being organized.

On Monday last week, CAF kicked off its anniversary celebrations in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with the meeting of the CAF Youth Competitions Committee headed by Slim Aloulou.

Earlier this year, Mr Issa Hayatou was appointment as the first African chair of the FIFA World Cup Organising Committee.

Safa will also honour 50 people who helped in developing the game on the continent with certificates.

In December this Year, CAF will round up its 50 years of existence with the Anniversary Football Awards in collaboration with Globacom - this is where 10 best African players during the past five decades will the honoured.
