Ghana to take on Guinea in Africa Cup of Nations

Accra -The draw for the 2008 MTN African Cup of Nations football tournament has placed hosts Ghana at the head of Group A alongside Namibia, Guinea and Morocco.

The opening of the 2008 African Cup of Nations, which kicks off on 20 January 2008, will be held at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra.

The draw here last Friday saw Group B being termed the Group of Death with seeded Nigeria drawn alongside Cote D'Ivoire, Benin and Mali to be based at the Essipong Stadium near Sekondi.

Defending champions Egypt lead Group C at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium at Kumasi alongside the Sudan, Cameroon and Zambia.

Tamale will play host to Group D which comprises Tunisia, Angola, Senegal and South Africa.

Tunisia, Nigeria, Ghana and Egypt are the seeded teams for the continent's premier football competition.

Ghana begins its fifth attempt at picking up the trophy with a tough task against Guinea in the opening game on 20 January 2008.

The Black Stars, who are tipped to win the trophy following their recent form, will face a tricky match against the Sylla Nationals of Guinea, rated the fourth best team in the continent with a bunch of talented and youthful players.

Claude Le Roy, head coach of the Black Stars, said in his reaction to the draw that each of the teams in the group was capable of making it to the next stage of the competition, hence the need to take every match seriously.

He said the Black Stars would approach each game with equal determination and there would be no room for complacency. However, he was confident the Black Stars would make it out of the group stage up to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Regular participants Morocco and debutante Namibia make up the other members of the group.

Two-time winners Nigeria and Cote D'Ivoire and in-form Mali will square off in Group B along with underdogs Benin, making their second appearance in the continental soccer festival at Essipong near Sekondi in Western Region.

The final will take place on 10 February 2008.

The mascot for the tournament has been named Agro-Hene, an eagle in flight, clad in the rich Ghanaian traditional attire, Kente, with black-striped shots to match.

The mascot was unveiled by Ghana's President John Agyekum Kufuor and the President of the Confederation of African Football (ACF), Alhaj Issa Hayatou, at the global launch of Ghana 2008 held in September.
