North West outlines 2010 security plan
Rustenburg - The North West provincial government is ready to tackle 2010's safety and security issues head-on, said MEC of transport, roads and community safety, Phenye Vilakazi on Friday.
He was speaking at a two-day provincial 2010 safety and security summit in Rustenburg. "Rustenburg is the only town selected in the province to host the 2010 matches, but the provincial government wants to ensure that all towns - including Rustenburg - will be safe for tourists and soccer spectators," Vilakazi said.
The summit was attended by all municipalities, national government security agencies and private security companies.
Neil Naidoo, who represented the Eastern Cape at the summit, outlined his province's safety and security plan for the world cup.
"A volunteer programme is needed as it could fill gaps within the security environment," he said.
Provincial co-ordinator of the SAPS 2010 activities, Senior Superintendent Callie Calitz, also outlined detailed issues required in the provincial safety and security plan.
He challenged the summit to further explore the province's readiness to handle security for the soccer tournament.
Meanwhile Vilakazi quoted findings of a report by consulting firm Grant Thornton, which stated that the 2010 World Cup would pump about R21.3 billion into the country's economy, generating an estimated R12.7 billion in direct spending and creating an estimated 159,000 new jobs.
"All these figures are impressive but their realisation depends on one critical issue, which is the security of the people and property," said Vilakazi.
"The understanding is that people will not only be interested in soccer matches but will also want to explore other areas of interest in the province, hence the importance of making the whole province safer during the tournament and beyond."
