Nelspruit - Sports in many schools in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga have turned into integrated and extramural component of the holistic education programme.
This is thanks to a five year partnership between the Mpumalanga and the State of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW), Germany that aims to enrich sporting programmes in schools in a view of the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ and beyond.
Called the Youth Empowerment Scheme through Sport (YESS), the project qualifies educators and the unemployed that will offer learners at schools and out of school with youth life-skills empowerment.
“The project started in 2007 and will proceed until 2011 with the introduction of athletics and swimming as codes to also benefit from the German expertise in an effort to accelerate the rate of sports development in the province through the academy,” said coach David Nyathi.
Commenting on the project during an Imbizo visit to the academy, Education Minister Naledi Pandor commended the project.
“You are doing a great job in empowering our youth especially at schools … through projects like these our youth will be encouraged to participate in sport.”
The minister together with President Thabo Mbeki and other cabinet ministers are in the province to for a two-day Presidential Imbizo.
She hoped that the programme might be introduced in other provinces.
Interacting with ministers who visited the project, trainees raised challenges that they faced.
Among them was the lack of support and participation from school managers from some schools.
“We want to give back to the communities but we can’t if the principals chase us away,’’ one of the trainees told the ministers.
Other problems they raised were the lack of proper sporting grounds in schools.
In response to this, Public works Minister Thoko Didiza and Minister Pandor assured them that the matter would be addressed.
Supported by the provincial and local government, Department of Education, SAFA:Mpumalanga and Local Football Associations including Mpumalanga 2010 Office, the project aims to produce more than 2 000 qualified coaches.
Another project visited was the Mbombela stadium training centre which aims to boost local job creation, build goodwill with labour force and client bodies.
The centre offers training programmes in bricklaying, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and tiling.
Jabulani Nkosi, who is an electrical trainee at the centre, told BuaNews that he knows he will benefit from the training programme.
“From here I know that I can find a reliable job because of the accredited certificate,” Mr Nkosi said.
