Mbeki to resolve Mbombela workers grievances

Nelspruit - The grievances of the unhappy construction workers at the Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit, will be dealt with, says President Thabo Mbeki.

Assuring unhappy workers during his visit to the construction site on Saturday, President Mbeki told them that he would reply to their grievances to the relevant unions.

“I promise to take up the matter with the relevant stakeholders,” President Mbeki told the group, which was reported to have been picketing outside the stadium.

Workers are demanding night shift allowance, bonuses and better working conditions.

President Mbeki, who was accompanied by cabinet ministers, interacted with the workers while on his visit to the province’s 2010 project sites as part of a two-day Presidential Imbizo.

This follows management's refusal to meet their R800 night shift allowance demand, said workers' spokesperson James Maseko when speaking to BuaNews during the visit to the site.

“Our agreement with the management was that they pay us R1 500 but now they decide to pay us R500 … because we don’t want to work nightshift.”

He further dismissed that the picketing was part of attention seeking.

“Our government must know that we are unhappy … we want to engage them so that we can find solutions to the problems we face so that we can all be happy,” said Mr Maseko, adding that the money they are earning is not enough to meet the high cost of living.

The President, however, noted the progress with regards to the stadia construction.

Interacting with workers on the site, he said so far good work has been done and progress made.
